When is a zirconium crown the right choice?
A crown is recommended when a tooth has lost too much structure for a filling or a veneer to be reliable. Typical situations include:

- Root-treated teeth, which become brittle and are protected by a crown against splitting.

Zirconium versus metal-ceramic and E-max
Patients often ask why zirconia rather than the metal-ceramic crowns they had before. Metal-ceramic crowns are strong, but the metal blocks light, so the crown looks opaque, and the metal margin often shows as a dark line when the gum recedes. Some patients also react to the metals used. Zirconia solves all three problems: it transmits light like a natural tooth, has no metal margin and is fully biocompatible.
Compared with E-max, zirconia is roughly twice as strong and is the safer choice for back teeth, bridges and patients who grind. E-max is more translucent and is sometimes preferred for a single front crown next to natural teeth. Both are excellent; the choice is about the tooth, not about fashion.
Aftercare and lifespan
Zirconium crowns do not decay, stain or corrode, and they resist chipping better than any other tooth-coloured material. Clinical studies show survival rates well above 90 percent at ten years, and many crowns last 15 to 20 years or longer. The weak point is not the crown but the tooth beneath it, which can still decay at the margin if plaque is allowed to collect.
Care is simple: brush twice a day, clean between the teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, have a professional cleaning once or twice a year and wear a night guard if you grind.
